PTSD and sleep apnea

At Advanced Homecare we take great pride in our ability to work with members of our nation’s military, both active duty and veterans, to provide them with the tools and tricks to treat sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea has been steadily rising amongst troops. “Over a 14-year period, active-duty US military members reported a marked 45-fold increase in rates of insomnia and 30-fold increase in rates of obstructive sleep apnea.” (AJMC.com)

Female service members are most likely to go undiagnosed, but there are options that are suitable and affordable for all troops and veterans with PTSD and sleep apnea.

Does PTSD increase the chances of sleep apnea?

Studies on those already suffering from PTSD show that PTSD sufferers are more likely to suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, regardless of other traditional predictors, such as older age or being overweight.

“OEF/OIF/OND* veterans with PTSD screen as high risk for OSA at much higher rates than those seen in community studies and may not show all classic predictors of OSA (i.e., older and higher BMI). This study is the first to suggest that the Berlin may be a useful screener for OSA in a younger OEF/OIF/OND veteran population with PTSD. Screening of younger veterans with PTSD for OSA should be standard care, and polysomnography and OSA interventions should be readily available to younger veterans.” (National Institute of Health)

What can be done to help troops with sleep apnea?

Being an active duty service member means a lot of travel. Being an active duty service member with sleep apnea does not have to mean travel with a bulky, full-sized PAP machine.

If you are a TriCare Active Duty Member, diagnosed with sleep apnea, and you travel on official business or are deployed, you may qualify for a FREE TravelPAP machine.

This machine weighs less than one pound! It’s perfect for our military servicemen and women. To find out if you qualify, fill in the form on this page: https://advancedhomecareonline.com/travelpap-for-troops/

Not active duty? You can still purchase this amazing machine! Fill in the form and we will be in touch asap!
